What to Eat in Dotonbori and Kuromon Ichiba
When you travel to Japan, forget the diet, explore the streets and dig in on the treats! Here are the list of foods we tried at Osaka's famous gastronomic places - Dotonbori and Kuromon Ichiba when we traveled to Japan last April - May 2017.
Dotonbori
1. Takoyaki - We head to Dotonbori on our first day in Japan and the first food we dig in was Takoyaki. Fresh from the mold, Steaming hot round balls topped with bonito flakes. It costs ¥600 for 6 pcs.
2. Grilled Scallop - a must try street food! Grilled buttery, light soy sauce flavor! It was really flavorful. It can be found in Dotonbori and Kuromon Ichiba but we preferred the one sold at Dotonbori for the reason that the scallop is more fresh and there was a perfect balance of seasoning. It costs ¥500 for 1pc.
3. Grilled Crab leg - The stall is decorated by a big giant crab located just in front of Dotonbori alley, a few steps from Shinsaibashi Shopping Street. The two pcs of crab legs of about 8cm size cost ¥950. A bit pricey but we tried it anyway because the aroma of the grilled crab is really inviting. And we did not regret it! The crab meat is really tasty!
Kuromon Ichiba
1. Yakisoba - we are starving when we reach Kuromon Ichiba so we started our street food venture with Yakisoba.
2. Grilled Gill Area of Tuna - partner with beer and your ready to go. The Gill Area of Tuna was glazed with sweet barbeque sauce which caramelized after grilling. It was so good we even order another two pcs for take away. An average size cost ¥500 yen while the big size cost ¥700.
3. Tuna Sashimi - We bought the set with the combination of red meat and medium fatty tuna (Chotoro). It was really fresh! The set costs ¥2000 and sold in the stall selling the grilled gill area of tuna.
4. Wagyu Beef - served street food style. The stalls also sells Kobe Beef.
5. Grilled Scallop - we really love the grilled scallop we tasted in Dotonbori that's why we tried it again in Kuromon Ichiba. There are couple of shops selling grilled scallop in Kuromon Ichiba unluckily the stall we chose did not meet our expectation. It is not as tasty as the one sold at Dotonbori. It is still ok but can be improved by adding more butter and soy sauce.
5. Octopus on a stick aka Tako Tamago -These are baby octopus with quail egg inside. How did they insert the quail egg inside the octopus? I have no idea. ๐ We wanted to buy 1pc only just to try but the auntie insisted to take the remaining three pcs for the price of 1. It was sweet, cold and tender. The taste was not bad but I think 1pc is enough for me.
There are a lot of foods not included on this list that can be found at Dotonbori and Kuromon Ichiba like Fugu Fish, Sea urchin, etc. If you are on a budget please don't skip the grilled scallop and crab leg. Try it! You will not regret it๐
