What's Inside SEGA Joypolis at Odaiba, Tokyo?
We traveled to Japan last May 2017 and part of our two week itinerary is Odaiba, Tokyo. Odaiba is a huge place with a couple of shopping malls and indoor theme parks. We had a whole afternoon to spend so we decided to go to one of the indoor theme park SEGA JOYPOLIS.
What's inside SEGA JOYPOLIS?
We bought our tickets in the counter in front of the park. Normal ticket price is ¥4300 for park admission and access to all rides and interactive rooms except "Zero Latency VR". If you want to save they have this Night Passport for ¥3300 which includes admission and access to rides and interactive rooms but it is available only after 5 pm on Mondays to Fridays and 4pm during Saturdays and Public Holidays. If you are non-resident of Japan, bring your ID and passport and you will save another ¥300 yen. We got our tickets for ¥3000.Yey! The park operates until 10pm so we did not mind going late afternoon.
There is another option, if you do not want to try all the rides and attractions you can buy only the admission ticket for ¥800 and ¥500 for non-resident just present your ID and passport. Individual attraction tickets can be bought inside which cost ~ ¥600 to ¥800 per ride/entrance.
We entered the park and was greeted by jolly staff. Good vibes on the way! Inside are interactive indoor rides, virtual reality game, horror rooms and normal arcade stuff.
We haven't experience VR Games so we tried "Zero Latency VR". We paid another ¥1800/person for this game. My pocket have holes already. 😂 But it was worth it! We registered and the staff give us a schedule. Before the game started, there is a short briefing on the rules inside the VR Room, after that they give us our gears consist of VR head gear, a gun and a backpack like apparatus. 😁 We entered the empty room and started wearing our VR head gear. The room transformed into something that looks like an abandoned building with beams and cargo boxes scattered on different locations. Then zombies appear all over the place and we started fighting them like mad soldiers. 😅 We finished the game and exited the VR Room with sweaty armpits and wide grins in our faces. Its was really fun to try. I guess this is the highlight of our Joypolis experience.
We cool down for a while then queued on our next ride - Half Pipe. Half pipe is an exhilarating ride that tossed you 180 degree sideways with 360 degree twist while on standing position but don't worry because it has a safe support mechanism. It is a competition between the other half pipe riders wherein if both riders pedal at the right timing, you will get points. At first, I thought it was a normal ride but when we started peddling we go higher and faster and twisting 360! I was screaming my lungs out and leave all the peddling to Ed. 😂 It was a fun and dizzy ride and our 2nd favorite.
We also tried Tranformers Human Alliance Special, a stationery ride that involves twists and turns while targeting enemy ships.
Initial D, a racing car simulation.
There is also a roller coaster ride but we are too dizzy to try it so we skip that one.
We entered one of horror rooms narrated in Japanese. We did not understand the language but we can relate base on the crew's actions and facial expression. The finale is unexpected. I will not divulge it. You must try it yourself. 😁
This is the summary of our experience in Sega Joypolis. We had a fun afternoon and enjoyed everything inside the park. I recommend this place to all travelers visiting Odaiba, Tokyo!
On a side note, Gundam life size statue was already dismantled when we visited Odaiba, but the good news is they will replaced it with a new one later this year 2017.
